Parrot plates and stickers

If you use your van with yellow number plates for private purposes, it must be registered for fully or partially private use. You need to pay tax on private use of the vehicle and you need to replace your yellow number plates with parrot plates.

Change the use of vehicle in the Danish Register of Motor Vehicles

Often, tax on private use of a vehicle is collected at the same time as vehicle weight tax or green owner’s tax, and it depends on how you use the vehicle.

If you use the vehicle for both private and business purposes, you will be charged half the normal tax.
If you only use the vehicle for private purposes, you will have to pay the normal tax.

Tax rates on private use of vehicles, 2015 and 2016

A sticker has been issued for each van with yellow number plates registered for private or both private and business transport of goods for the first time in the period of 3 June 1998 until 1 January 2009.

The sticker may be in use as long as you do not change the use of the van.

If you want to buy ‘parrot plates’ (papegøjeplader), you can deregister the yellow plates and buy parrot plates.

Tax on private use

When your employees use a car with yellow plates or ‘parrot plates’ (papegøjeplader) for private purposes, you need to pay tax on the value of having a company car at your disposal.

When, as employer, you use a car with yellow plates or ‘parrot plates’ (papegøjeplader) you cannot deduct the expenses in your business accounts.

VAT and private use

If the allowed total weight of the vehicle is maximum 3 tons and it is used for both private purposes and purposes subject to VAT, you are entitled to deduct VAT on your operating costs. Such costs could be petrol, repairs and ferry tickets.

If the allowed total weight of the van exceeds 3 tons, you are entitled to a deduction for the driving you do for business purposes.
